Ayurveda approach
According to Ayurveda, people with a kaphagenic diet tend to have
high cholesterol. To lower cholesterol levels and prevent increase
in cholesterol levels, Ayurveda recommends the following:
Low Cholesterol friendly food
Watch what you eat. Stick to the kapha-pacifying diet and avoid
food high in fat like fatty foods. Do not take cheese, yogurt
or high-fat milk. Reduce consumption of sweets, cold foods like
ice cream and desserts, and drinks.
Do include onion and garlic in your cooking and
food. Also take foods that are natural cholesterol busters. These
are:
- blue corn
- oatmeal
- quinoa
- millet
- apples
- grapefruit
- almonds
Herbs are effective against cholesterol. Include them in your
diet or drinks to help bring balance to cholesterol levels.
· Cinnamon and trikatu tea
Drink this tea twice a day to lower cholesterol. Mix ¼
teaspoon of trikatu herbal mixture with 1 teaspoon cinnamon and
steep for 10 minutes in a cupful of water. Add honey to taste.
You can also just use ½ teaspoon trikatu
with 1 teaspoon honey and drink this 2 to 3 times a dat. It is
great for burning ama and the extra kapha, helping to maintain
cholesterol.
· Garlic
Mix ½ teaspoon grated ginger root, 1 clove of finely chopped
fresh garlic to ½ teaspoon of lime. Eat this before each
meal.
· Herbs of three
Control your cholesterol with this effective herbal mixture;
3 parts kutki
3 parts chitrak
¼ part shilajit
Use ½ teaspoon 2 times a day with some honey
and water.
· Chitrak-adhivati
This herb has an amazingly effective in reducing cholesterol levels.
Take a 200 mg. chitrak-adhivati tablet twice a day after lunch
and dinner.
· Triphala guggula
Take a 200 mg. tablet of triphala guggula 3 times a day.
Hot Honey Drink
A hot cup of water with a teaspoon of honey, taken early in the
morning can help remove fat from your system and lower cholesterol.
You can add 10 drops of cider vinegar or a teaspoon of lime juice
for a more effective drink.
· Exercise
Exercise, together with a good diet can control cholesterol levels.
Try taking walks every day during the weekdays for at least half
an hour. Or do something that you enjoy like dancing, swimming
and even aerobic exercises for at least three times a week.
· Breathing Exercise
Breath of Fire, also known as bhastrika, is helpful in reducing
cholesterol.
· Yoga for Reducing Cholesterol
The following yoga postures are good for maintaining a good cholesterol
level: the Sun Salutation, Shoulder Stand, Peacock, Cobra, Spinal
Twist, Locust and Lotus.
