Ayurveda is the ancient art of healing that deals with all aspects of a person’s life as an entity. Ayurveda treatment has four components to follow in order to make the medication effective. First, the physicians who practice this treatment must have technical skill, scientific knowledge, purity and human understanding. Second important components are the food and drugs, must be of high quality, wide application, grown and prepared following approved procedures and should be available adequately. Third, all nursing personnel need to have good knowledge of nursing. He or she must know the skills of their art and be affectionate, sympathetic, intelligent, neat, clean and resourceful. And the last importance is the patient himself. The patient should be cooperative and obedient to follow instructions of the physician, able to describe ailments and ready to provide all that may be needed for treatment. Proper diet, exercise and good living style are recommended too.
There are several classifications of this treatment used depending on the needs of the patients. These are the Shodhana therapy or called as purification treatment, Shamana therapy or Palliative Treatment., Pathya Vyavastha or prescription of diet and activity, Nidana Parivarjanam or avoidance of disease causing and aggravating factors, Satvavajaya or psychotherapy, and Rasayana therapy or the use of immune-modulators and rejuvenation medicines.
In India, there are up to 80% of people using some form of traditional medicines, such as Ayurveda. In Sri Lanka, There are currently 62 Ayurvedic Hospitals and 208 central dispensaries in the public system, and they served almost 3 million people in 2010. In total there are currently approximately 20,000 registered practitioners of Ayurveda in the country. In the US, safety concerns have been raised about Ayurveda, in their two studies finding about 20% of Ayurvedic treatments contained toxic levels of heavy metals such as lead, mercury and arsenic. Other concerns include the use of herbs containing toxic compounds and the lack of quality control in Ayurvedic facilities.
